David McCartney went to international lengths to propose to the love of his life, Yvonne Robinson.
He was waiting at the New York airport for his girlfriend when she flew in from Paris in the early hours of the morning.
“It was a complete surprise to say the least,” recalls Yvonne, who was travelling through Europe and the States with her friends.
David soon popped the question on the rooftop of their hotel, which overlooked the stunning, brightly-lit Times Square.
“We then had the most amazing time together for the next week, seeing the best of everything New York has to offer and living every girl’s dream of shopping for my engagement ring in Tiffany’s New York, Harry Winston, DeBeers and Cartier,” Yvonne says.
The Herne Hill pair tied the knot on the beach in Barwon Heads on a beautiful summer’s day, followed by a reception at At The Heads with 100 of their loved ones.
They agree that the breathtaking beachside location was the perfect setting for their romantic day, and added only a few personal touches to complement its beauty.
Yvonne and David decided early on in their wedding planning that they would write their own vows.
“It was important to us – it made the ceremony all the more personal and meaningful,” she says.
Other personalised touches included displaying framed photos of themselves together at varying stages of their relationship throughout the venue, and bringing inside the centrepiece of the ceremony – a gorgeous white timber frame backdrop – to act as a photobooth for the reception.
“The menus doubled as place cards and at the top of each was a speech bubble with sayings like ‘Take a seat, Steve’ or ‘Pull up a chair, Laura’,” Yvonne says. “Otherwise there were simple flowers in ornate jars on the tables.”
Yvonne wore a gorgeous sweetheart peplum gown by Amaline Vitale, with her bridesmaids’ striking cap-sleeved metallic dresses only adding to the glamour.
Yvonne’s podiatrist sister Lauren contributed her own thoughtful touch, taking a make-up course so she could do the bridal party’s make-up on the day.
Looking back on their day, David advises fellow grooms to do what they can to help out.
“Play to your strengths – book the band, sample the menu, get your suits, but never ever comment on what the bridesmaids should wear,” he says.
