Can you tell us about Pearls & Roses?
I had outgrown working out of my mum’s sun lounge at home and not long completed a fashion design and construction course at The Gordon and had always been very determined to have my own business and label. An opportunity came up in a family building in Latrobe Terrace and I got busy sewing my first wedding gown collection. I think there may have been less than a dozen gowns I had handmade. I opened the shop in 1990. The following 28 years has seen thousands of wedding gowns handmade on the premises. The business has gone from custom-made wedding gowns only, to importing several labels in after five, debutante, bridal and accessories such as shoes, headpieces and veils.

What kind of gown and bride style can you cater to?
Pearls & Roses sits at the pinnacle of couture design in Australia, dressing savvy women for formal events, from high school graduations to television red-carpets. Brides from across the country entrust me and my team to produce the most treasured gown they’ll ever own. I have always catered for any age bride, whether it be an 18-year-old or an 80-year-old. We are able to cater for any style, as we are able to offer both retail and bespoke custom-made gowns.

Can you describe a bride’s experience at Pearls & Roses?
The store is appointment only now which allows private time with the bride and myself or team member, with no interruptions. We will ask about her wedding day and location and perhaps a brief of how she may want to dress. Quite often a bride feels overwhelmed by the choice and styles available so we will quickly try to put her at ease. Several wedding gowns will be chosen from our vast collection and we we move into our private fitting suite. For those looking for custom, a sketch can be done during a consultation for the bride. However, now more often the bride provides images from their phone as a brief and I sketch it and source laces and fabrics to create the look this way.

Custom-made gowns are a speciality of Pearls & Roses, why do many brides go down this path?
Increasingly, I have had brides-to-be flying from interstate for my designs. Our clients recognise and appreciate quality tailoring. It is also a process which our clients are heavily involved in. We turn their dream wedding gown into a reality. Most brides generally feel their gown should be unique and personal and being able to design or be part of designing it themselves makes it so much more special for some. Having the same lady fit her and be involved in a personal experience of hand making is something special from beginning to end. Our ability to create the most precise fit and cut, due to 28 years of fitting experience.

What can you offer for the mother-of-the-bride or mother-of-the-groom?
We have created some absolutely magical bespoke pieces for mother-of-the-bride and mother-of-the-groom. My mothers tend to give me a brief or image and I will help source the fabrics and laces and hand draft a pattern and fit in cotton before cutting. These ladies are always extremely happy as we are able to produce in house a garment that fits their figure and gives the gown or garment an individual look.

What is the best part about creating gowns for your brides-to-be?
Seeing a bride’s happy face and learning about their wedding is one of the best parts. I do enjoy pleasing the brides and helping them create their dream gown. The best part of this experience is having a creative input into customising the most exquisite gown a woman will ever wear and will always cherish and remember how special their time with us was during the lead-up to planning their wedding and during the making of their gown. Many lifelong friends have been made over the years. It certainly is secret women’s business once inside my private fitting rooms. All in all I love my job.
