A song sung from the heart was a fitting wedding night present for Jacqui Newland’s new husband, Jono McLean.
There wasn’t a dry eye among the 80 guests when the former X-Factor contestant surprised her groom with a rendition of Etta James’ classic At Last at their reception.
“I think Jono had an inkling I would sing for him,” Jacqui says, smiling.
The pair met at Belmont High School and shares a love of making each other laugh. After seven years together, Jono proposed at Torquay front beach, and the couple continued the seaside theme by saying ‘I do’ in Hamilton Island on October 4.
“We went up there for a little post-engagement getaway and fell in love with our surroundings,” she says.
A special touch came when Jacqui’s older brother, Josh, walked her down the aisle.
“It was really special to me because my Dad passed away when I was younger so it was nice to have my brother there by my side when my Dad couldn’t be,” says Jacqui, who wore a gorgeous strapless gown she designed with Karen Bourdamis from Pearls & Roses Bridal.
Her advice for brides-to-be is to make sure nothing is left to the last minute.
“You want to be stress free on the big day, so don’t be afraid to delegate jobs to your friends and family,” she says.
“I have some amazing girlfriends who were able to help out; I don’t know how I would have done it without them.”
