The natural magic of a rural property near Lorne set the tone for Kim Scott’s dream wedding to Tom Lonergan.
Like the couple, the celebration of their love was relaxed with a focus on having fun in the native setting.
A cool botanical colour palette of white, grey and green was used throughout the ceremony and reception, complemented by silver lanterns and candles for warmth.
Hay bale seats were covered with blankets and the marquee was clear to provide uninterrupted views of the enchanting landscape.
“Tommy and I are pretty laid-back people and we wanted our wedding to reflect this,” says Kim, who credits Weddings of Desire stylist Laura Harvey for capturing the organic vision.
“The property is just so naturally beautiful, we didn’t want to deviate too far away from this raw magic.”
Kim was teaching in a remote Northern Territory community in 2009 when by chance Tom, a Geelong premiership footballer, volunteered at the school. She moved to be by his side three months later. Now a dietitian, Kim made an elegant entrance to their January 31, 2016 union as she walked down the aisle to Paul Kelly’s When I first met your ma.
“The dress was a classic design with a little modern edginess to it,” she says of the Houghton gown.
“It was something completely different to what I had envisioned.”
For dinner, the newlyweds sat among the 160 guests. There was purposely no separate table for the bridal party. Plates of steak, salmon, roast potatoes and salads were passed around – again to encourage interaction.

A Pimms cocktail station and boutique coffee van serving espresso martinis and hot donuts completed the sumptuous occasion.
The first dance was to a folk acoustic version of Tina Arena’s I’m in Chains. Later, Tom and Kim were hoisted into the air during a rendition of American Pie.
“Tommy’s brother started jumping while I was on his shoulders and I had to limbo under a chandelier,” Kim says, smiling.
The festivity was given more character after some minor mishaps, like the beer being put in a freezer and the bride’s shoe getting stuck in the veranda.
Tom, dizzy from a happy ambush of well-wishes after the ceremony, accidentally kissed a mate on the cheek as thanks.
“Even when things don’t go to plan, that’s where all the good stories come from,” Kim says.
“If it’s not funny then, you will laugh at some point.”
A couple of weeks after the wedding, the Lonergans announced they were expecting their first child.
“I was 10-weeks pregnant and not many people knew,” Kim says. “We love knowing that our little one was with us on our special day.”
