Jazz music was playing, candles were flickering and the love of Brittany van der Kruik’s life, Scott Roncon, was down on one knee when she walked through the door of their Herne Hill home.
“After many smiles, laughter and whisperings of ‘I love you’, Scott proposed and I said yes,” Brittany remembers, smiling.
The couple, who quickly bonded when they met in 2012, tied the knot in front of 50 of their closest family and friends at the Sacred Heart College chapel, and followed with a 1940s Great Gatsbythemed reception at Gladioli Restaurant.
It was a family affair, with Brittany choosing her two sisters as her bridesmaids, and Scott asking his cousin and Brittany’s brother to be by his side. The flowergirls were the couple’s cousin and niece.
Brittany’s grandparents made the jam for the wedding favours, her aunty made the cake, and the bridal party and Brittany’s mum, Sharon, designed the wedding invitations and menus.
But the most special touch was that Sharon designed and made her daughter’s elegant embellished bridal gown, as well as the bridesmaids and flowergirls dresses.
“There is a history of keeping weddings very personal in our family,” Brittany says, explaining that her mum made bridal and bridesmaids dresses for her own wedding, and her two sisters’ weddings.
“My great grandmother also made my grandmother’s wedding gown back in 1963, as well as her own.
“It is so amazing that this is continuing throughout the generations of our family.” MADE IT HAPPEN
