Q&A WITH NATALIE SITKA

We love the beautiful artwork you’re creating for couples. How did this come about?
I have always been quite a sentimental person and I am drawn to really personalised gifts and mementos. I love anything bespoke as I believe it is so much more meaningful. So when I started my art business, I always had in mind to create one-off pieces for special occasions. Most orders were initially for babies and children. My work with couples and weddings began when a florist asked me to do an illustration of her favourite bouquet that she created for a wedding, and I thought what a lovely idea that would be to offer for brides as a keepsake, as an alternative to photos. It developed into drawing couples when I was asked to do an illustration as an engagement gift. It grew from there.

What do you offer?
I create wedding bouquet illustrations, or couple illustrations for weddings, engagements or just because. I use fineliner and watercolour and it is all hand drawn with no digital manipulation. Couples can organise these themselves, or they can be arranged as gifts.

What is the process for couples wishing to have this cute keepsake created?
I just need a photo of the bouquet or couple, and any information about them that might help me to show their individual personality. I am happy to work to a specific idea that someone has in mind or I can take creative control.

What do you love about capturing couple’s special days?
I love that I get to play a small part in what is often the most beautiful, magical and optimistic time of someone’s life. It is such a joyful experience, from receiving the initial photos to playing with ideas of how to represent it and, of course, the reaction from the people who receive the work is the best part. I love that my work gets to be a tangible representation of that time, something that will be cherished forever.

Describe your work in three words.
Playful, quirky, authentic.

What have you created in your artistic journey so far?
I have had requests for illustrations to celebrate all the special milestones, starting from an engagement gift, wedding invitations, wedding gifts and also to celebrate a one-year anniversary. I even drew someone’s wedding cake which was fun.

Why should couples consider investing in personalised artwork?
It is something unique to each couple that acts as a keepsake to feel connected to a special person or event. It evokes beautiful memories, can be cherished forever and passed on to next generations. Imagine having a gorgeous drawing of your grandparents on their wedding day. It is also such a thoughtful gift idea and something that is guaranteed to be appreciated.

What is the best feedback you’ve received?
A couple loved my illustration they received as an engagement gift so much that they are now using it for their wedding invitations.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
Colour, nature and texture. I snapped a picture of some tree bark the other day because it captured my imagination. Inspiration is everywhere if you look for it.

What’s in store for Natalie Sitka Art?
I will be exhibiting some personal work at a gallery in London later this year so that is my next focus. I am also looking to work with a printer so that I can offer my clients a stationery suite with their special image, which can be used to send thank you’s after the big day.
